As of September 2022, the reference lists of more than 60 million scientific publications indexed by Crossref are fully publicly available. This achievement is the result of more than five years of efforts by the Initiative for Open Citations (I4OC).
On 25 August 2022, the White House ordered that by the end of 2025, federal agencies must publish all publicly funded publications, including the research data on which they were based, in open access free of charge.
